Tarkin and Krennic: Are we headed for a continuity error or a "Rogue One" cameo? ["Tarkin" and "Rogue One" spoilers possible]
If you've read the novel "Tarkin" (which I highly recommend, by the way), you'll know that our old friend Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin was placed in full control of the Death Star project after proving himself to his long-time mentor, Emperor Palpatine.
Director Orson Krennic, the proto-Tarkin looking, cloak-rocking Imperial badass set to appear in "Rogue One" and the "Catalyst" prequel novel, is said to be in charge of the Death Star project.
What's going on here? Is Tarkin in charge or is Krennic in charge? Is this confusion a prelude to one of the first major continuity errors in the New Canon or is it setting up a "Rogue One" cameo for everyone's favorite dry Imperial officer, Willy Tarks?

Not sure, but a Project Manager and Commander can be two totally different jobs and I think they've been hosing novel canon now for years.
That being said, the actor playing White Cloak could certainly have played Tarkin, he has the hawkish look. Maybe it was out of respect to the fabulous Peter Cushing they didn't replace him.
How epic would it be if Orson Krennic was just an assumed identity that Tarkin uses when he doesn't want his reputation to color the interactions with people he's never met before?
I find it more likely that his Krennic's failure in this movie will be the catalyst for Tarkin to take over.
That said, as @IngridMatthews already pointed out Project Manager and Commander are two VERY different roles. In the corporate world, PM's usually handle project task organization, whereas Directors/Commanders handle project direction.
