Tarot App Recommendations
Many people who introduced themselves in this community seem to be experienced readers which might be slightly intimidating for those who are just getting started. I thought I would make a post about tarot apps, something that helped me out the most with getting started with tarot. Apps were a free and discreet alternative to getting a deck, which allowed me to see whether I liked tarot and was prepared to get more committed to it. I only used two apps so far: Galaxy Tarot and Golden Thread Tarot.
- Galaxy Tarot (for Android) - my favourite! I even upgraded to the paid version a while ago. But for a long time I used the free version and it was more than sufficient. It's a digital RWS deck that allows for draws using several different spreads. There is also a 'card of the day' function. The app offers key words and suggested interpretations for each card (upright and reversed) which really helped me learn. And I still use those suggestions to aid my interpretations.
- Golden Thread Tarot (for Android, for iOS) - It has a smaller choice of spreads and offers less elaborate guidance on each card. It offers interesting options for tracking past readings and collecting statistics like most frequent suit or most frequent theme of question. The options are focused on promoting self-reflection. The deck itself is RWS-based, designed by Tina Gong. It was an app that I really, really wanted to love but didn't. It has beautiful animations, a great design but in the end it turned out to be too minimalistic for me.
But don't take my word for any of this! I talked to many people who detested Galaxy and loved Golden Thread - try them out if you're interested.
I also know that there are digitalisations of many decks here but they're all paid and I never really found their design appealing, so I never tried one.
Do you have any thoughts on these or any other tarot apps or tarot apps in general? Would you be interested in trying one?

I agree about the Golden Thread Tarot . It looks gorgeous , but I just didn't connect to it at all. That and the lack of spreads definitely didn't help.
I actually think the Fool's Dog apps are definitely worth the money. They are digital copies of actual tarot decks that cost around $20. The apps includes the LWB, a variety of spreads, plus a journal to keep track of your reading. I consider it a godsend because I don't have the space for all the tarot decks I want lol.
Huh, I might reconsider them after all. Maybe if I come across a deck I like but not enough to want to save up for it? Right now I only have two physical decks so I'm not too worried about space - actually, I always seem to be out of space on my phone. Which Fool's Dog apps do you have and like?
The Fool's Dog apps I have :
So yeah I think the apps are great and fairly cheap with some of the decks only $1.99. I do wish I still had the Galaxy Tarot app though. It was awesome when I had my old android phhone : )
I love the galaxy tarot. I have a hard time considering alternatives. Just out of curiousity, why are people using all these different decks? Is there that big of an advantage? Also, does anyone not use reversed cards? I have always felt that allowing reversed cards in spreads carry more weight, and almost always use them.
I think that decks with illustrations by different artists can often bring out new meanings in the cards, show and emphasise their different aspects. And also (maybe at a more shallow level) different people connect better with different art styles - for me, it's hard to imagine getting great results from and developing a great relationship with a deck I consider ugly. I agree about reversals. I appreciate the increased number of possible outcomes in readings that comes with them and I feel that not allowing them would result in less insightful and less rich readings. But I think many readers don't use them because they include the reversed interpretation in the pool of all possible card interpretations and interpret based on context and their intuition.
Since this post popped back up I thought I'd mention I used Galaxy Tarot for Android as well for many years and liked it a lot. Was handy for learning too. Not sure about new versions because it has been some time.
