Google Chrome gets its own QR code & barcode scanner
Here's one more app you can delete from your iPhone: that QR code and barcode scanner you only occasionally use. With an update rolling out today, Google's Chrome mobile browser can do the job instead. The app now includes built-in scanning functionality, which you can access either via 3D Touch on the app's icon, or you can do a search for "QR" in spotlight.

Haven't QR codes already passed their prime? I feel like they were a cool idea everyone got super excited about, but then they kind of died off before they ever really managed to become ubiquitous. I think having to have a separate QR scanner app rather than just having the functionality built into your phone was definitely part of the problem, so it'll be interesting to see if there's a revival of these or if the built a feature for something that's already become largely irrelevant. I almost never see QR codes anywhere anymore, and when I do, it's on a sign that's a few years old.
There was also conflicting standards(QR vs 3D barcodes).
Where I use QR codes the most is setting up two factor authentication.
Wanting to scan a QR code is something I do so rarely, I don't keep an app on my phone for it. Having it built into Chrome though is pretty nice.
