Let's Talk Supergirl
Anybody remember that scene in the West Wing, where the humorless busy body feminist tells Sam that he's sexually harassing the blonde republican sexkitten, and said sexkitten whips out the Sorken speech of truth on her ass? You know the one. The ham handed screed against SJWs that alt righters wish they could have written, conviently stuck into the mouth of a female character and dressed up as real feminism?
I had flashbacks to that scene, this evening, while watching Supergirl, and she objects to the name and 51 year old Calista Flockhart goes off on the absolutely cringeworthy "I'm a girl" speech.
We're not going to speak of the 'Because she's just a girl?' line. Now, or ever. Best bury that one in soft peat to be dug up later when we can laugh about it.
I feel like I'm watching the feminist show a room full of dudes came up with. Like, I can tell they're trying. I can feel them straining under the pressure of coming up with ways to overtly feminist at me. Maybe if I'm too busy cheering your progressiveness, I won't notice that your heroine is your standard pixie dream nerd who's badass quotient is almost directly correlated with how sexy she looks.
AVfM loved the show. That should say something.
It's possible I'm just bitter. Someone recommend me a show with a real strong female lead. I've already seen Jessica Jones, The Killing, and The Fall.

I recommend Orphan Black, and I've heard good things about Wynnona Earp and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries but haven't watched either myself yet.
I know exactly what you mean about the first episode of Supergirl. I did watch a few more episodes and it got better but I didn't keep watching after the midseason break.
I've started watching Orphan Black like twice now, and somehow never manage to stay involved past the first series. Maybe I'll try again.
Without ever seeing West Wing or Supergirl, somehow I know exactly what you're talking about. If you're bitter, than I'll gladly be a bitter bitch with you.
Like classics? I'm slowly making my way through Buffy; I'm really upset I didn't start it earlier in my life. Or X Files?
That's all I got off the top of my head, but I'll def add more if they come to me.
Alas, Buffy is the standard against which all my "Strong Female Leads" are measured, and still, somehow, mostly fail to meet, even this many years later.
Love the Buffster.
I did, recently, go back and watch some of the first seasons of X Files. Scully gets soooo much better in later seasons, and that's the Scully I remember. It's weird watching her be a bit flat and 2 dimensional in the first couple of seasons.
Agreed! It takes them both a little bit to settle into themselves, but the overwhelming nostalgia of the 90's helps to carry me past it.
Did you watch the new episodes from the reboot earlier this year?
I have not! Not yet. I imagine I'll find them when they appear on Netflix or Amazon.
Sadly, Agent Carter suffered from a male concept of what feminism should look like as well, although I will always adore Peggy.
Damn. I had high hopes for that show.
There's so much wrong here I hardly know where to begin. And before you say "opinions can't be wrong" I'm talking discrete, independently verifiable facts.
Let's start with the line we will not discuss. It changes a bit when you realize the line is not "Because she's just a girl?" but instead "Because she's 'just a girl'?" A world of difference, because the character is saying anyone who discounts Supergirl for being 'just a girl' is ignorant and not worth her time. This 'cringeworthy speech' LITERALLY says if you have a problem with Supergirl, she's not the problem, you are.
What a disgustingly sexist statement. That's the opinion part we can disagree on. The objective, easily fact-checked part? Ali Adler, who wrote the story and teleplay for the pilot (as well as being co-creator of the show), would be completely stunned to learn she's a "dude". I think her wife would also beg to differ with you on this point.
Having no idea whatsoever what that is, I looked it up. The article doesn't explicitly say if they loved or hated the show, but I'm not seeing a lot of love. Maybe the love is in the forums? Let's check. Some choice quotes include "Really terrible show, bad acting, bad writing", "Shoddy show", "I do avoid it. And all shows like it. Pure blech.". I'm going to stop there because just the couple minutes spent in their forums to see that the "love" doesn't exist made me need a shower.
Quite possible. But it's also equally possible the show just isn't for you. Not every show will be. If you don't like it, simply don't watch it. But maybe question why you feel the need to spread hate about it and address that. Changing the channel just seems like it would be easier to me.
Well, the reason I need to spread hate is because my father didn't buy me a pony when I was a little girl. Obviously.
