Imzy combining similar communities -- is That Gaming Forum doomed?
Imzy is planning to consolidate similar communities so that discussion of similar topics isn't spread out. I wonder if that means our humble community will be slammed into the Gaming community.
It does seem we have a different flavor here, focusing more on casual games than the hardcore gaming plebes of Gaming. The many, many polls that show up there all list games I've never played (which is, arguably, just because I am a frickin' CASUAL and don't play popular games like WoW, Overwatch, LoL, Battlefield and that ilk that actual gamers play).
Still, it's undeniable that we do talk about gaming HERE, and they often talk about gaming THERE.
For that matter, there are game-specific forums, such as the Pantheon-specific one I follow, and people's personal blogs where the leader doesn't really expect much discussion, or other people posting there. What happens to those?
I thought about making a Final Fantasy Brave Exvius community once, even did a poll on it, but decided against it because, well, poll said not to :) Also, the FFBE subreddit is really the proper place for FFBE fans. Making a dim copy of that here would be a disservice to the people who write guides and offer help on the main sub. I just kept blogging about the game on this forum, where we also talk about anime, otome, random Topics Of Interest and so on.
I don't think Imzy is actually going to combine us with Gaming, but I DO wonder if there were a better way to differentiate us from the gaming forum, so that people wondering where to post a gaming item would be able to say, "ah, this sounds like a TGF topic!".

I was kind of wondering about how that is going to work for us, as well.
I think one thing that makes TGF a bit different is that we're more "geek centric" than "game centric." Yeah, we talk about games (video, tabletop, board). A lot. But, we also kind of spill out in all sorts of other geekery, like books, TV, movies, science, etc. I feel like we're not as laser focused as the gaming community.
So, the fact that we are casual may make us more approachable than the regular gaming community. Like you, I don't really play all the popular stuff. I mean, here, I am going on about my otomes and silly junk that most gamers would roll their eye at.
But, I don't know...I don't know exactly what would make people make the distinction that "this is a TGF topic."
Totally not doomed. That has to do with inactive communities mostly.
Ninjaedit: I don't yet know most of the answers to the questions you have though. I'm gonna meet with kaela today and we're gonna try to figure it out better.
Cool! As a follow-up, I'm assuming that any personal blogs are also being left alone since they are just that: personal blogs that aren't expected to be super busy.
Yeah I don't expect personal blogs to be messed with.
Glad to hear TGF isn't doomed. It has become my new online home in the way that (going way back) gaming SIGs used to be on Compuserve and such.
Yeah I've really enjoyed reading this community, it's quite cozy.
What I find special about it is that, so far at least, we can talk about pretty much anything without fear of rejection (mostly). For example I'm playing No Man's Sky. On 9 out of 10 communities on the Internet, mentioning that game would draw a lot of comments about how much it sucks and how the developers are liars and cheats and how I'm an apologist for the devs and yadda yadda yadda.
And I know that lots of people here didn't like the game, but I like it and when I talk about it, they just ignore me rather than feeling the need to correct me and point out that I'm wrong for liking it, if that makes sense.
That kind of "Let people like what they like" attitude is pretty rare these days.
And just hours after I post this someone faults me for enjoying For Honor. BLOCK AND MUTE TIME!
How is For Honor? Don't have access to it... but want to Samurai it up. Is it like the PC game Tiger Knight?
Beta opens later this week so I haven't played in a while, but it's basically a melee fighting game that focuses on stances that you change, iirc, with one of the analog sticks. It's primarily a PvP game but I guess they're throwing in a quick single player campaign that they say is more like extended training than anything. I liked the alpha but I'm not sure I liked it enough to spend $60 just to play matches against other people over and over. And sorry, I'm not familiar with Tiger Knight.
Well, we came to Imzy because we needed someplace that A) wasn't as obnoxious as G+ had become with Google's constant meddling, and B) allowed us more space than Twitter, and C) wasn't Facebook.
I admit that we didn't know Imzy HAD an overarching GAMING space until someone stopped by and started berating us for creating ANOTHER gaming space.
BUT, as the most active members here know, we came here for the above reasons, AND because -- to put it bluntly -- we're not known to flourish in "someone else's space". We're the kind of folks who don't usually walk into another party and make ourselves at home, which is why having our own space was kind of important to us.
Oh jeez I'm sorry someone berated you guys over that! Totally not cool. This community has a different tone than the main /gaming comm, and I think that's great :)
No worries...I'm sure it was well intentioned from whomever it was back when, but you know how written words translate sometimes :D
