Posting Mortem - Adopting Imzy
Posting Mortem - Adopting Imzy
Posted by Scopique on Dec 5, 2016 in Editorial | 0 comments A few weeks ago, we created That Gaming Forum community on a new social network called Imzy. I thought I'd written about this earlier, but I checked and...I guess not. Imzy is a "nicer" social network.
External post on how our community is doing.
Here's some short stats:
- 757 members! Thank you to everyone who follows this community!
- Rough average of 60 "activities" per day (I assume that means a view of posts in the community, whether direct or alongside other communities in member's front page view)
- We get several new posts a day, with fewer on weekends (understandable)
- We have maybe about 5 people who comprise the overwhelming bulk of the new posts.
- We have maybe about 10 people who comprise the bulk of commentators on existing posts.
There's not a lot of hard stats available (actual post-per-day average, most prolific posters, etc.) but those kinds of features are in the works at Imzy HQ, apparently. I'm spitballin' stats here based on casual observations.
So all things being equal, a return of 10 out of 757 is kind of poor, but I like what's been going on here. I appreciate that folks are willing to give this community a try, and that many Imzy users have adopted this forum alongside their other communities.
Thanks to those of you who sub to our community, and I hope you find posts of interest here. Thanks to those who comment on our posts and bring the discussion to our corner of the Internet. Super thanks to those who keep pumping out stellar posts and give the community life.
Tell your friends to stop by sometime!

I said I would give it my best effort :-) You called me out for being cynical about new gamer social network sites and you were right.
As far as engagement goes, well... it's better than Ello. I feel my posts reached more people, though, when I put them on G+. I reshare most of my posts on Twitter, and they have gotten more views than reshares from my blog, perhaps because they share some imzy hashtag.
On the other hand, I am writing/blogging again. So that's something.
Should we have the discussion about why we don't use the Gaming sub? Aside from we just want to be a clique and talk only amongst ourselves? Which is a totally valid reason, obviously, but is it the only reason?
The gaming sub? You mean the /Gaming community here?
I don't know that some of the initial colonists of this community would have come if we had just slipped into someone else's community. Being "just us" works in favor of those who might like to participate, but might not gain traction when dropping in on someone else's house party, or when there are vast volumes of strangers around. Consequently, that might also be why we're not seeing other people posting here who are from other communities.
And, you know, there's something to be said for having control over your portion of the platform, to create the rules and such when you know (at the time) the bulk of desires of your community.
Ah yeah, gotta lose the Reddit-speak.
I post here because I like thinking I'm talking to friends. I don't know the people in the /Gaming su... community. And I would have the same expectation that even fewer people would care about my nerdlike obsession with games where I can enhance my play by writing programs and designing spreadsheets... I feel my gaming likes are very, very different from that of most other people.
Being that I don't bother reading posts about whatever team shooter people are playing, or stuff. I look at what's shared on Forge and understand I have zero interest in what most people find fun.
Since this forum is an older crowd, I find it a more comfortable place.
My real point, though, was that we're calling ourselves "That Gaming Forum" without really explaining what separates us from the more popular gaming forums.
Right now we're the community of people who were on Twitter, Buzz, Wave, G+, FaceBook, Ello, Anook, and now here. And, the adoption from the regular Combat Wombat crew has been minimal, with a lot of people still solely using FB and Twitter.
So maybe we just need to figure out what would draw someone here. I think the Wombat crew is the best, but there's other people out there who don't yet know us but might like to be part of this community of ... let's be honest ... older gamers.
And we like to post LONGGGGGGG posts XD. So kind of like a communal blog.
Honestly, that's what I like about our crew - older gamers. I'll be completely honest and say that it was the immaturity of Player.me that made me eventually abandon it.
I liked Player.me in that I sometimes was alerted to games that I had never heard of, before. However, I had to wade through a TON of Harambe memes and general shit-posting to find those rare gems.
After awhile, I stopped visiting, altogether.
The shit-posts are one of the main reasons I stopped using Player.me. It's not a nice place. Not anymore. I mean who wants to filter through hundreds of shit-posts of Harambe and 12yo kids starting drama? I sure as hell don't.
Maybe this is why I enjoy using Imzy so much. It's refreshing to have decent conversations with people who actually want to talk about video games.
Is it because the community is older? I'm not sure, but what I do know is that I'm grateful to be here.
Sadly, I think the "by gamers, for gamers" tag is A) overused, but B) hit or miss. The Anook folks are nice, but I only registered on Player.me so someone didn't bogart my nickname. I looked around there and Noped the hell out of the real quick XD
And! And! Because of the way Imzy works, there's no reason why folks can't follow BOTH (or many other) communities at the same time to get the best of all worlds!
So we could participate in /Gaming for a wider audience, and return here for some smaller, more familiar conversationalists.
The funny thing is I wanted to join Imzy to read more good content from you guys. :)
See simultaneous reply above :-)
Hey gang!
For those of you who don't know me, I'm MisterWoodhouse, Imzy's Gaming Community Manager.
I'm so stoked to have you here, making this vibrant gaming community.
I am happy to answer any questions you may have about Imzy :)
I have a question. I'd like to streamline my Imzy by removing some other non-gaming related Imzys I may have joined or were autojoined in the past.
How do I do this?
Click this link to access your membership management. You can use the Leave links to remove your membership from whatever communities you please.
That page is listed under your account menu (the dropdown in the top right hand corner of the desktop site).
Casual gamers -- that's what we are, really.
Casual gamers are the best gamers :D
I think an introduction post might be a good idea and maybe "pin" it for a few days so people can see it and reply.
I'll be honest, I only know @Scopique and @Arislyn because of posts I've either read on Twitter/ Player.me. So even then it's not that much. So I'm curious to find out who the other 700 odd members are. I get that maybe people just wanna lurk but we might snag a few.
So good/bad idea? I'm just trying to think of ways to help this community grow. Also if this has already been done, feel free to ignore me and point me in the right direction.
Has not been done yet! Mainly because originally we'd only been advertising to the Twitterati (ergo, folks we knew) and didn't really know that/expect folks to filter in from other Imzy Nations. But now that we have grown, that would be a good addition to the community.
