I consider Medium to be 3 quarts (or 3 1/2), Large to be 4 quarts or 4 1/2, and XL to be 5 quarts and up. A Small is mostly only good for a dipping sauce, a Medium is good for the hot spiced cider or meatballs in a sauce, a Large is the usual round one that I have so many of, and the XL are usually oval or oblong.

When I measure the capacity, I can't always rely on what the box says, but I know I've personally poured 4 1/2 quarts into a crockpot that I've marked as being 4 1/2 qt.

Excellent points. I wrote the references this way to correspond to various recipes I'll (someday) post.
