Is This High-Tech Bridge a Path to Smarter Infrastructure?

A bridge connecting New Hampshire to Maine is getting a high-tech upgrade, including smart sensors to monitor the surrounding environment and tidal generators to produce power. The Memorial Bridge, connecting Portsmouth, NH to Kittery, ME, was built in 2013.

This data from these sensors will allow bridge crews to perform proactive maintenance on the bridge, reducing long-term costs and extending the life of the bridge.

Do they actually have the budget to perform that maintenance? Its great to add sensors and notifications so you know if something is wrong but if you cant react to that and actually do anything about what it shows you its kind of useless. One of the main issues with the current infrastructure is there is no budget to do anything about it falling apart until its too late and and about to fall down.

I do agree with you, but just because out politicians can't get their head out of their butts doesn't mean we shouldn't continue to develop tech that can make out infrastructure better. Our infrastructure is something that has been for the most part neglected and something we seriously need to focus on.

I live in PA, we built a bridge to catch debris from another bridge to prevent that from falling onto cars below the bridges. For the past few years roads and bridges have been neglected until it becomes really dangerous and way more expensive. I do agree we do need to do something about it sooner.

Wow, that is just crazy. It's sad to think about to be honest. We have all this amazing technology and despite spending all the money out government spends, they don't seem capable of investing is some vital parts of our country.
