London is a rarity in that it is a beautiful city that hides a long history beneath a modern face. In the streets of the British capital one can trace a century’s worth history through the horrors this city has endured: the losses suffered abroad during World War I, the damage sustained at home during World War II, and the anxiety of a city on edge as enemies across the pond threatened their very existence during World War III. Travellers can find themselves walking down a brick road one minute and standing at the foot of a towering skyscraper the next, representing the duality of the United Kingdom’s proud and long-lived culture with London’s position as the economic capital of the European Union.
Landmarks
The Blair Monument is a tribute to the state leaders responsible for leading the Coalition of Sovereign Resistors (CSR) in the Third World War. Incorporating the animal which has represented England for so long, this steel statue depicts a lion standing two metres tall on its hind legs as it roars into the air. A plaque beneath the monument alphabetically lists the elected leaders that represented the CSR’s member states during the war, with the United Kingdom’s Tony Blair being etched in bold to make it stand out against the others.
Five Canada Square is not just the tallest structure in Canada Square but also the tallest structure in the entirety of the United Kingdom at two hundred fifty metres in height. Known to locals as the “Ottawa Tower”, this skyscraper is considered an icon of the post-war economic boom Europe has experienced since 2003 and reflects this with a marble wall at the base of the tower which has the entire Treaty of Ottawa text etched onto it.
The Sky Tower is one of downtown London’s most fabulous landmarks. At fifty-one storeys and over two hundred metres in height, the Sky Tower more than fulfills the needs of the European Central Bank, to the institution for which it serves as the headquarters. Built in the deconstructivism architectural style, the Sky Tower is intended to reflect the sky as its exterior is almost entirely covered in glass and the strange turns and curves of the building make it difficult to discern its exact shape during the daytime.
Events
Be sure to visit the European Central Bank’s headquarters at the Sky Tower for Integration Day on August 1, which commemorates the United States’ adoption of the euro in 2012 with a number of festivities including a courtyard filled with food trucks serving American-English fusion cuisines. Be sure to arrive early, as walls of protestors will shut down traffic in the area eventually as the day wears on.
London celebrates not just the valiant soldiers and war heroes who fought in the Third World War on the Day of the Sovereign Resistors, but also the bold leaders who never set foot on the battlefield but kept the fighting away from British shores. While most European cities hold military parades to commemorate September 18, London hosts the largest of these and a heavy police presence makes protests unlikely, allowing the procession to continue swiftly over the course of about an hour and a half.
Peace Day is celebrated on December 2 and is one of the most important commemorations in the modern United Kingdom. A public holiday, the tone accompanied by Peace Day is often a somber one as public and private broadcasters alike air content related to the Third World War and honouring the sacrifices of British soldiers in the conflict. Most citizens of London know someone that was killed or maimed in the war, and so the city comes to a halt for one day as locals reflect on their past and stay at home.
Advisories
Pro-American ideals are still reviled by many who fought in or were otherwise affected by the Third World War, despite attempts by the European Union and the United States to bolster international unity. Travellers are advised to keep their thoughts on the war and the United States to themselves.
