(A continuation of yesterday's bit, featuring Karin's further chunin exam misadventures.)
Karin yelped and threw herself frantically out of the creature's path. Her ankle nearly buckled as she ran for cover, and she twisted, fell, and rose again.
It wants to eat me, it's going to swallow me whole— Her thoughts were a jumbled loop of terror and desperate survival. Nothing else mattered to her but getting out of the path of that gaping mouth and the fangs that were easily taller than her.
After a moment, though, she stumbled to a halt. A glance behind her confirmed what she'd already guessed: the snake wasn't chasing her. Instead, it seemed almost panicked. It was thrashing wildly, slamming its body against trees and letting its massive tail whip wildly through the air.
Karin flinched as one particularly close lash of its tail sent a nearby branch collapsing to the ground, but she held her ground. It seemed safer not to move right now. Attracting its attention could only put her in more danger.
She peered closer at the massive creature, trying to figure out what it might be doing. Why would a monster like this act so terrified? Had someone put it under a genjutsu? Could you put snakes under a genjutsu?
Karin blinked in surprise as her mind's eye picked up on what her physical senses had missed.
No wonder it was struggling—there was something wrong with its chakra. A bright blue chakra was forming within its throat, growing stronger and brighter with every passing moment. It threatened to overwhelm the snake's own muddy, undeveloped coils entirely.
Please don't be an attack, she thought desperately. It would be just her luck to stumble across some kind of gigantic chakra-powered venom-spitting snake in these training grounds.
(Her jounin-sensei had told her Konoha would be the soft-hearted village. He'd lectured all three of them on how they'd never get a pass this easy again. Showed what he knew.)
As she watched in mixed awe and horror, the snake's throat bulged and distended. It shrieked towards the sky, fangs flashing in the speckles of sunlight that filtered through the canopy, and then…
And then it exploded.
