Not shrews or saints: let's treat women like human beings

Not shrews or saints: let's treat women like human beings

The flip side of the torrent of misogyny unleashed on Hillary Clinton this election season (and frankly, most of her professional life) is the idea that we should elect women because we have magical womanly qualities that will make us kinder, gentler, more effective leaders. We're nurturing. We're compassionate.

"In other words: If you adopt the stance that part of your role is to protect your wife or girlfriend and to be made better by her goodness, then you get those aforementioned perks, without losing your place in the gender hierarchy."

It's also a constant reinforcement of who we "should be," so that when we dare to be agressive or gross or emotionally unavailable it becomes acceptable to withdraw respect.

I read a quote from a journalist re the Slut Walks who rhetorically asked women if they thought it was a "good idea" to "antagonise" the police who were there to protect them. The idea that somehow we were expected to earn our police force's services by being polite--I was livid.
