Saudi family therapist offers advice on how to ‘beat your wife’

Saudi family therapist gives advice on how to 'beat your wife'

A Saudi Arabian family therapist has released a video giving his advice on wife beating.

In the tutorial, Khaled Al-Saqaby says he is "aware that this issue is a thorny one, which contains many hazards".

He adds: "But Allah willing, we will cross this bridge safely."

This is so fundamentally weird. I started watching the video feeling sick, not just at the endorsement of spousal abuse but also at the idea that a wife should be obedient to her husband/whichever man owns her at that stage in her life. Fuck that noise.

Then it turned bizarre. It's beating, but it's nice beating. You're supposed to shame your wife, not hurt her. He does mention that sometimes men are abusive in imitation of their own fathers, then goes on to preach about what a grave problem it is that some wives want to live in equality with their husbands.

And then... she's asking for it.

Frankly, I find this kind of thing more toxic than outright abuse. It's abuse, but it comes with a nice shield of self-righteousness, which makes people feel justified in their shitty behavior.

I acknowledge there are cultural differences, but I feel like this is attitude toward women is morally wrong in a space beyond culture.
