Character of the Week: Elli Quinn!
Elli Quinn, Space Mercenary!
Why do you think she joined the Dendarii? What do you think she's doing post-canon?

I always figured she basically couldn't wait to get away from barrayar and its treatment of women. She probably never thought she'd really have the chance, but once she got to Beta I bet she was thinking of ways to run away. Getting to be a part of the Dendarii was probably a fantasy come true, and she wouldn't let go of it for anything, because it meant she was finally her own person, she was valued for herself not her gender (and not unvalued because of her gender).
She's probably learned that it isn't all rainbows and roses being your own person, and the life of a mercenary can't be a happy, easy one, and probably once in a while she thinks about what if, misses some of the familiarity of Barrayar. But she's smart enough to know she can't and wouldn't ever go back.
I wonder if she resents the Barrayaran ownership of the Dendarii, or thinks of it as a tie to home, or just doesn't worry about it?
I think you confused Elli (Admiral Elli Quinn, from Kline Station, featured in Ethan of Athos amongst other books) with Elena (Elena Bothari-Jesek, from Barrayar, Armsman Bothari's daughter who hates Barrayar and eventually settles on Escobar with Baz Jesek) :P
Duh, of course I did. That's what I get for trying to make a quick comment on my way out the door to work. Well, my thoughts stand for Elena. ;-)
