Is Human Composting the Future of Urban Burial?
Funeral practices hide death from view, often at the expense of the environment. Can we die with dignity - in a way that saves the Earth - simply by embracing death? By Laura Yan A Tibetan Buddhist meditation goes: Death is certain, when life is uncertain, so what should you do?

I like the green burial and death positive movements. The stigma surrounding end-of-life makes it more frightening and confusing than it has to be. Ok and I also rather like the macabre, but that's coincidental, I'm sure.

"Death positive movements" my Thursday is made. No point in even doing anything else.
Meteor worship is optional.
I always wanted a green burial and a weeping willow planted on top of me. Also I never ever ever ever ever want to be buried in a cemetery.
For some reason, I have an overwhelming fear of being put in one of those solid-state, satin lined, metal clad boxes designed to help preserve the dead. Let me go, you assholes! Let. Me. Go.
[laughs] Actually, I wouldn't mind that. But I've loved vampire Hammer films all my life ;-)
Oddly enough, I'd be willing to crawl into a coffin and hang out while I'm still alive, lay silent, arms crossed, eyes closed, but being put in it after death when I have no choice? No way. I know it's a silly, unreasonable fear, but it's there nonetheless.
Oh, everybody has odd fears... I don't like going into pools when it's dark because I start hearing the Jaws theme [laughs]
I think what amuses me about body preservation is the idea that maybe in a thousand years, scientists would tinker with my bones and analyze them for whatever reason, as unlikely as that is.
I'll let them analyze me in my tree form. ;)
That sounds good to me! I wouldn't mind being turned into a tree.
This sounds like an idea whose time has come. I wonder what other green options are available currently.
There is a group of morticians who've made it their cause to change modern death and funeral practices. Most of what I know of it comes from following Caitlin Doughty on Twitter.
