Campbell's story is one that needed to be told
The spotlight on the CWHL goes to players who are on the national teams, on Olympic teams. But that’s not a typical experience. Of the 125 or so players in the league, the majority aren’t part of National programs. They have regular jobs, and play hockey for fun and for pride.
Campbell was faced with a decision that so many women’s hockey players face when they graduate: Do they give the game of hockey up in order to pursue a career or get their life settled? Or do they continue to play hockey while doing all of that?
Great piece on Carlee Campbell by Jared Book. (He's quickly become one of my favourite CWHL writers since I read a piece by him last season)

I have nothing against John Scott, but I was offended when Spooner called Carlee Campbell 'the John Scott of women's hockey'. I think she was only referring to Campbell's unexpected victory in the voting, but that's not the first comparison that comes to mind. John Scott is a enforcer, somebody left over from old-school hockey whose hockey skills aren't even close to usual standards which NHL players have to meet, who climbed the hockey ranks due to his ability to punch somebody in the face while on a sheet of ice. Campbell may not be the best hockey player, but she's a solid middle-of-the-pack player (she has 1 goal and 8 assists this season) and her presence on a team certainly helps the team in terms of hockey skills.
Overall, I really liked this article. The writer makes a good point - national team players may enjoy playing hockey in professional leagues, but for some of them (not naming any names here...), their focus might be on their national team position, and they do their time with their league team in order to maintain their eligibility. But for players like Campbell, there's no pay-off waiting around the corner - they only play because they love the game.
I'm really glad this ASG shone a spotlight on such an unknown player. All CW fans now know who Carlee Campbell is!
