The Toronto Furies beat the Les Canadiennes de Montreal in BOTH games for the first time in their history.
Let me repeat:
The Toronto Furies BEAT the Les Canadiennes de Montreal in BOTH games this weekend!
It was a stunning performance for the Furies, who have really shown that they're not the same team that they were last year. Their rookies had strong performances as did the veterans. Veterans Kohanchuk (who returned this season after a season-long injury last season), Allen and Terry got points, as did rookies Fast and Cava. In the first game, the Canadiennes were clearly half asleep, only managing 19 shots on goal (even the Blades managed 22 goals against the Canadiennes in their last game against them), with the Furies outshooting them with 30 shots. The Canadiennes put the gas back into their tanks for the second game, outshooting the Furies 32 to 22, but the Furies continued their dominance, putting 3 goals on the board in the first period, kept their lead throughout the game and put away 2 more goals before the end. In total, Rougeau, Marin and Ouellette managed to get goals for the Canadiennes, but it wasn't nearly enough to keep up with the Furies' dominating performance. Who would have guessed that it would be the Furies to end the Canadiennes season long winning streak, and hand them TWO back-to-back losses? The Furies are truly back to being contenders!
The Brampton-Calgary match-up also had a surprise: Like the Furies, Brampton finally showed up as the cohesive unit we got used to seeing last season and they beat Calgary, breaking the league's other season long winning streak. The Inferno had 7 (!) powerplays in the first game, but only managed to score on one of them. Brampton was a dominating force throughout the game, putting away at least one goal per period. Calgary fought back for the second game, outplaying Brampton and scoring at least one goal per period. This series of two games is very reminiscent of how these two teams played last season and it's no surprise that each team walked away with a win and a loss.
In a stunning outcome, the Furies are now tied with the Inferno for first place in the standings, while Brampton is slowly climbing the rankings after the slow start.
TOR 2 - 1 MON
TOR 5 - 2 MON
BRA 5 - 2 CGY
BRA 1 - 4 CGY

I am so glad for the Furies! They're doing so good this season compared to last.
It was a fantastic weekend for them! I'm so thrilled they're back to being contenders. Last season was such an embarrassment considering they won the Cup the season before. Not having Kohanchuk last season and not having enough offensive power really hurt them. This season, their new rookies have given them much more firepower, and having Kohanchuk back seems to have given them the adrenaline shot they needed.
