I stumbled across the article and loved how it deconstructed a well-known story, picked apart what was really behind the premise. I thought its perspective might be useful for other people when building their worlds and plots.

I read this a while back and I sorta love it. It makes such good points, both on the worldbuilding end (how do they not sonograms when they have planet-destroying deathrays?) and on the character end. And honestly I think it says so much about how women and pregnancy is treated in huge bits of the fantasy and sci-fi genres (heck, others too, probably), as convenient plot-devices designed to render female characters useless, or to give male characters "justified" grief and anger, or to just generally be an "obstacle". Or, of course, to produce "chosen ones".
