4/6/16 NEW COMICS OPEN THREAD - SPOILERS IN COMMENTS
Since Jay is busy at ECCC (hoping you guys are having fun over there) I took it onto myself to make the weekly discussion thread for this week (hope nobody minds).
So any thoughts on Old Man Logan #4 or Uncanny X-men #6? How amazing was Black Panther #1 and Black Widow #2? Are you reading Batgirl or Midnighter?
Looking forward to reading your comments ;)

Thank you for jumping on this! <3
My pleasure. Happy i could help ;)
OT but the only book I had time to read was The Wicked + The Divine #18 with Jamie McKelvie back on art. SO GOOD!
It was amazing. It was glorious. It was...ahh, I loved it SO much. I'm glad they took the time to do character work on individual gods, the context changes everything. Sakhmet, especially, so much more interesting now.
I really should pick it up...
It is fantastic. They just came out with a hardcover of the first two arcs, or you can get the always awesome $9.99 introductory Image trade.
Seconded. Issue 18 is where everything came together for me. The Wicked + The Divine is definitely the spiritual successor to Phonogram, and appeals to a broader audience.
I don't say that to cheapen W+D; not everyone is going to have the requisite knowledge of 90s Britpop, or the desire to research it if they don't, to enjoy Phonogram. If Phonogram is too high concept, W+D is much more accessible, and no prior knowldge of pop music is necessary. W+D does have excellent world-building, and is worth it for McKelvie's superlative character-design and art alone.
I would agree the WicDiv is much more accessible. This issue almost felt like a superhero comic.
ok you guys convinced me i'll pick up the first trade when i get a chance ;)
WicDiv #18 was great. Big explosions! Perspehone kicking ass! I love this series so much.
Black Panther #1 was fantastic. I'm really hoping this story is building towards Wakanda insitututing major democratic reforms that leave the Black Panther more a figurehead. Because I do not like monarchies. I do not consider that an ideal system of government. I also really liked the two Dora Milaje. It's cool that Coates is bringing in a same-sex couple right off the bat, as major parts of the story being told. But they're also cool beyond that. It's two women, sworn to uphold the laws and traditions of their country, choosing instead to defy their king and fight against the corruption and injustice they see, in order to make their home a better place. That is a compelling story! That is far more compelling than a monarch fighting to defend his inherited authority.
Vision #6 is creepy and unsettling. Virginia is terrifying. "I want to get to clean" is the highlight of the issue, to me.
New Avengers #9 is ridiculous. It is gloriously over-the-top. American Kaiju! Avenger mecha! YUUU! ESSSS! AAYYY! Though the moment between Pod and Toni was my favourite part of the issue. "User status: Not alone." Aw, Pod. I want Pod to get some happiness.
UXM was great. Turns out, having a competent artist makes the writing vastly better, too. Now that Monet looks like herself, she also sounds like herself. And I gotta say, Lashley draws an awesome Callisto. Reminds me a lot of Paul Smith's Callisto.
UA was also great this week. I seldom have much nice to say about that series, but this was a genuinely stellar character-focused issue. Rogue gets some great stuff here, with the flashback to her early time as an X-Man. It was a nice hit to the nostalgia, and a really effective scene. Also, her scene with Ms. Marvel was great. Ms. Marvel punched Rogue, and the world was right. I also like that Rogue accepts Kamala as Ms. Marvel.
And Spider-Man added a new supporting character: Goldballs! Goldballs is in Spider-Man! Goldballs will be hanging out with Miles Morales and guys, Goldballs! Yes!
Lets talk about Goldballs in Spider-Man: maybe its me and my feeling of Bandis loosing his edge, but every time i see him insurting one of his new favorite characters into a story for no aperent reason i start to worrie that he just want to keep writing them for no reason other then he can, even when there's no narritive need for them, so he'll bend over backwards to justifie them being there (i'm looking at you Kitty). right now i'm enjoying Spider-Man and issuse 3 was the best one yet but this Goldballs just being added to the cast is really worrying.
Also (and becaus its a diffrent topic) I'm actually enjoying UA as a '90esk book with Rouge as one (if not the) central characters. Its fun over the top art and style of stories I can get behind (as long as its not every book on the market).
Whoa... Goldballs? I have to go back to the comic store now! And maybe add a Spider-book to my pull list for the first time ever...
I already thought Miles was pretty cool, but adding Goldballs really kicks things up a notch for me.
I'm so happy that Land is no longer on Uncanny. Frankly, I'd be satisfied with almost anyone else, but Ken Lashley is a far better penciler than I could have ever hoped for on this title. UXM 6 is a meaty issue, and I'm much more interested in what's going on with this team than the group over in Extraordinary.
Old Man Logan, on the other hand, is far too decompressed for me. There's not $3.99 worth of plot between the covers. I'm dropping it after this issue, and might check back in when it's collected in trade.
I like Black Panther a lot more now that I've had a day to digest it.
definitely agree with you on UXM 6 especially the comparison to Extraordinary.
and yea Black Panther is a book you need to adjust to in order to truelly appreciate and enjoy it
Priest's run on Black Panther is maybe my favourite Marvel run of all time so the bar was set high for me, but I did dig BP#1. Coates certainly did all he needed to do to reassure continuity nerds like myself, and his use of captions and heightened dialogue was refreshingly unselfconscious. Most of all I was thrilled to see him hint at the un-fridging of Shuri! Stelfreezes' art was top notch of course.
I'm just hoping She will be back and its not just a tangle thread to hook use in...
Word.
I was unsatisfied with the opening scene of Black Panther, because I found the action hard to follow and didn't get any sense of what the rioting miners' grievances were. But I liked the book overall - it did a lot of world-building and introduced characters who seem interesting. Definitely looking forward to the next one.
I agree with you on the opening but i think its suppose to be chaotic and rage indusing to convey how T'challa feels in that moment...as i said somewhere else you do need to adjust to in order to truelly appreciate and enjoy it
I'm honestly buying OML for the art and I have no problem with that. Those two spreads were amazing in this issue.
I was let down by Uncanny for the first time. The Morlock stuff was fabulous but everything else was just alright. I'm glad people will stop complaining.
Also Mighty Morphing Power Rangers is like really good. I'm guessing the artist will be getting called up to the bigs soon
I liked Uncanny X-Men #6, a lot. Maybe it was just because we're getting some Angel answers, or maybe the art change has made a gigantic difference I hadn't even noticed, but this comic went from one I was breezing through just because to one I'm actively enjoying. And while I loved Old Man Logan(the fight scene in this issue was a delight)...I'm kinda sad that he's apparently setting aside his vengeance quest. I really wanted to see him face Mysterio, or the Red Skull. I mean, sure, I imagine there are bigger plans in store for Red Skull, but still dying to see the day he confronts Mysterio.
Yea i'm also worried about Old Man Logan leaving one of the biggest thing that distinguish it form a regular Logan book..but i'm holding hope.
Honestly, the art alone sets it apart from anything else out there. I'm pretty sure the story's not going to disappoint, though, unless there's a writer change I don't know about.
oh the art is gorgeous and is a big factor in its uniqueness i'm just wondernig what makes a Old Man Logan storie and not All-Old Non-Different Wolverine... Also Lemire is a hit and miss for me as a writer so... :P
Only comic I got was New Avengers. It's great fun and thankfully only peripheral to the crossover. US army kaiju vs AIM jaeger! DaCosta is fascinating, he's basically what the New Mutant grew up into, ignoring all the stuff in between. And he's finally acting like a stinking rich dude. He was always written as needing to be the big hero, and now he is, he's constantly fretting that people might take him at face value. And he's kind of at risk of slipping into supervillainy too, which was always a possibility for the character early on. Finally, the new artist, who I can't remember the identity of, is brilliant.
if this was just an A.I.M. book as controled by DaCosta with Pod i would have enjoyed it more then what we got until now...
