Because it's about time someone did!
New Comic Book Day Open Thread - 02/08/2017
This week I'm grabbing Wolverine, Black Widow, Detective, IvX, and Wicked and Devine. Im trying checking out Steven Universe #1 and Justice League of America #1. Don't know if they will stick on the list or not, but they look interesting.
I did drop Wonder Woman this week. I haven't read an issue I bought for a couple of months. I am also droping Power Man and Iron Fist, not because of quality, or not reading it. It is an amazing book, and Walker has been killing it. But it was canceled for a Luke Cage solo book that is supposed to be closer to the tone of the netflix shows and that is not anything I want to have anything to do with. I like the shows, but PM&IF was something special. I'll finish it up when it hits MU. I'm really pissed that we're going to have self serious Luke and Danny after how amazing this book has been.
You know what? Fuck it. I'm going back to just X-Books. I get the feeling Hellcat is getting canned soon too. Every book I have really enjoyed and supported gets canceled. PM&IF was amazing. They even did a Civil War 2 tie in that made sense within the story that was already being told.

I love weeks like this, where every single book on my pull list is entertaining, enjoyable, sometimes thought provoking, but overall just really damn good.
Standouts among the ongoings I get were definitely All-New Wolverine #17 and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #17. Both felt like they were important issues in terms of moving the status quo forward. The development with Laura and the trigger scent especially feels big.
IvX #4 also benefited from moving the story along instead of just relying on battle scenes. I was a little underwhelmed by the Inhumans escape from their prison in Limbo - hopefully Colossus beating them down is better. The stuff with Magneto and Mosaic was also pretty great.
The Unworthy Thor #4 felt like a classic Thor: God of Thunder issue, right down to the different art teams portraying different time periods. Looks like the series will conclude with the revelation of just what made Odinson unworthy in the first place. That should be very satisfying.
Other books I pulled and enjoyed this week are: Alters #4, Jessica Jones #5, Ms. Marvel #15, and The Totally Awesome Hulk #16.
I enjoyed both AN Wolverine and IvX. The new developments with Laura and the scent is cool. I like that she can't be any one's weapon anymore unless she chooses. IvX had some solid moments, I especially like Mosaics body language when her runs out of the room as Magneto. It's fun seeing mags with different body language. A lack of confidence.
I'm probably going to grab Wicked and Devine this weekend. It is just so decompressed that each issue feels so short. But I love Gillen/McKelvie/Wilson music stuff, so crossing it off my pull this week was more of a money consideration thing. But with a severely shortened list without most of the marvel books I get, I should be able to grab it once I get my weekly shopping done.
My favorite book this week was Detective 950. It's a jumbo issue that follows the younger members of the team now after there was some shake ups in the previous arc, but also setting up what's to come over Tynion's (hopefully long) run. The first story is about Orphan and is drawn by Marcio Takara, and the book is worth it just for that.
Steven Universe was really cute. It felt like a really good side episode which is the best I could hope for. It's just Steven, Lapis, and Peridot hanging out at the barn.
Still haven't got to JLA, but the final story in Detective made mention of it.
I also have cooled down a bit from Wednesday. I'm still going to keep my Marvel list down, and catch stuff on Marvel Unlimited. I was picking up at least 5 Marvel books a week sometimes close to 10. It was just a bit much for me that another David Walker book was getting canceled, because everything he has done for Marvel since ANAD started has been so good and cut way too short. Nighthawk was a really great book, and actually delved into the structures and systems that lead to violence there (that gets over reported compared to other cities with much higher rates per capita), and could have gone much further, but had to go "Oh shit, wrap everything up now!" in issue six. Occupy Avengers is probably my favorite Avengers book I've read. Clint and Red Wolf play off of one another so well, and them going to Chicago to get help from Tilda, not Nighthawk, was a great twist that I wasn't expecting. She was definitely the stand out character in the Nighthawk solo. But that book won't be around for long, or at least I'm not expecting it to. Walker will probably just get his full team of unpowered heroes together, and then have to wrap it up.I'm glad Walker is going to continue writing for Marvel, because he does some really amazing important writing in cape books.
Sorry about the wall of text.
I canceled all of my Marvel pull list and will be trade-waiting for those (Unworthy, Squirrel Girl, ANWolverine). Wicked & Divine and East of West were as expected: great and frustrating (because I want the next issue Right Now). Still digging Wonder Woman. All-Star Batman has Tula Lotay so of course I bought it. Steven Universe has to wait a few weeks because I am not caught up on the show. Black History Month in its Own Words and Nameless TPB go into my "to read" along with my backordered "Love is Love".
I've been considering trade-waiting for a few more of the series I follow. There's some that just feel like they'd benefit from it (Saga and Deadly Class off the top of my head)
When I started reading comics again a few years ago, I was trade-only for a while. Saga is better in trade but I can't wait :) I think new titles tend to be hard to evaluate with 1 or 2 issues so I ended up buying trades of many new Marvel series in 2012 so I could see if I liked them. Some weren't even far enough along to evaluate after the first trade so I guess my answer was "no" to those. Saga, on the other hand, sold me on the first page of the first issue. Unfortunately, Marvel waits so long for trades that some titles are cancelled after 2 trades of material before the first trade is released. Like Mockingbird... they brought in a novelist but cancelled after 8 issues and didn't publish the trade (so her fans couls see & buy it at Barnes & Nobles or wherever they buy her books) until months later. So wrong-headed.
East of West is another that benefits from trade-waiting, especially if you can wait for the big oversized hardcover collections.
