Prince Charles backs bottle deposit schemes to combat ocean plastic pollution
The Prince of Wales has voiced his support for bottle deposit schemes that help combat plastic waste, whilst backing broadcaster Sky's new 'Ocean Rescue' campaign, which is being launched to raise awareness about the consequences of marine pollution. Speaking to Sky News, the Prince described the build-up of plastic waste in our oceans as "one of the most troubling environmental trends".
Prince Charles is shining the light of awareness onto the glaring problem of plastic pollution. He is calling for the UK to adopt Deposit Return Schemes (DRS) as a means to manage the environmental crisis that is plastic bottle pollution.
Significantly, DRS schemes in Germany have successfully reduced the pollution of plastic bottles by 95%. As a German resident, I can attest to the fact that people treat empty bottles here like currency and these always end up being deposited in the vending machines stationed at supermarkets. You will not see them littering the environment, period. In fact, it is common to see long line ups of people with loads of bottles waiting to enter these into the vending machines for a printout that can be redeemed for cash at the checkout.
In the meantime, why not stop buying plastic bottles completely? Get yourself a refillable water bottle and a water filter for home use (if you prefer not to drink tap water) and switch to glass bottles for water, juice and soft drinks.
Incidentally, a lot of the liquids that come in platic bottles are pretty shitty for your health anyway; soft drinks are a fantastic example. Who knows what it could mean for your health and for the health of the environment to let go of drinking soda from plastic bottles?
Happy Friday, everybody! :-)
