Plummeters: Gotham City

I think The Penguin has the potential to be such a cool Batman villain. I think he looks kind of cool in Batman Returns, but it's a bit too Tim Burtony (fun designs over narrative/character logic). He's too much of a snarling animal there. The character wears a tuxedo with a top hat and has umbrella weapons: he should have panache. Would have loved to see him get the Chris Nolan treatment but you don't have to get ultra grounded to make him work.
You begin to see some potential in the Penguin reinvention on the tv show GOTHAM — but the writing and underlying ideas on that show are so bad, I had to stop watching.
I don't have a lot of faith in the DC Cinematic Murderverse with its current scorecard. I think they've got a lot of course-corrections to do beyond figuring out how to make a cool Penguin.
Happy Humpday! Two more of these umbrella gifs to close out the week! What's it going to be??

Okay my favorite thing is angel toaster
LMHO -- "flying toasters" are a relic from another time when people bought "screensavers" for their computers to prevent images from burning in. The idea was, if you left your computer idle for a while, an animated screensaver would pop up. You could buy screensavers featuring your favorite cartoon characters (NO CALVIN & HOBBES -- relax, Bill Watterson), but the original screensaver breakout "character" were these flying toasters.
And now, you've been schooled!
School is in session!
Why don't people need this anymore for their screen?
Where can I buy an angel toaster for my screen?!?!
I can't believe people had such a sense of absurd humor back in the day!
Oh. My. God. I feel old.
It's entirely possible we're the same age and I was merely raised under a rock...
LOL
I suspect I am older than thou. But I'm OK with that. ;)
hehehe.
Toastertoastertoaster! 😄
Nolan Penguin would be a thing to behold. So much more interesting than Bane.
I too bailed on Gotham. Hideous.
I love that damn toaster, dammit. Kinda want to add it to my animated short but it's not my art and... I don't know...
add with credit?
I... could draw my own version of it and animate that... so it's like an homage...
Do it!
Humph... adding to tonight's workload!
:/
Ah. I suspect you didn't see my question or you would have pointed out that it's not your art. But I agree, use it with credit! It's an HOMAGE. 😄
What about like a dark, very suave, Penguin with panache - so suave and polite as to hide VERY DARK CREEPINESS lurking beneath!
I like dark characters whose darkness you don't see as obvious!
Like I enjoy the Phantom of the Opera because he appears so alluring on the outside. But I think they really mess it up by making his 'reveal of bad character' coincide with 'reveal of creepy looking face'
I dunno.
I have in the past tried to do a novel with POTO as inspiration - but with a female phantom
:)
YES, that would be a great "Penguin". He's a character in a tux with a top hat and a MONOCLE! He SHOULD be suave.
Eilis is The Phantom of Imzy!
eeeeeeeeee!!!! Phantom of imzy hooray!
Shall I lurk mysteriously with chandeliers?
Arsenal of chandeliers precariously hung, ready for chandelier attacks!
well hell, I was going to post a female phantom of the opera pic but literally cant readily find one where the costume isn't underwear

it's mandatory!
i want one this halloween too hehe
I gave Gotham a second chance after initial disappointment but I just couldn't summon any batfucks to give. The subtitle of season two, "Rise of the Villains,' told me everything I needed to know. Bruce is still a kid. By the time he becomes Batman he's going to be fighting a bunch of AARP members. Kind of cruel and unfair if you ask me. The appearance of Batman is what makes all these freaks come out, not the other way around. Sigh.
Robin Lord Taylor as the Penguin is the best thing about the show and the only reason I lasted as long as I did. Danny DeVito's portrayal of the Penguin is iconic, the most memorable of the original series villains (and the performance of DeVito's career). It's no wonder no one has tried to recycle Penguin like all of the other villains, it's a hard performance to match. Look at what happened with Jared Leto, he followed up Heath Ledger way too soon and ended up as the worst interpretation of the Joker.
He reminds me of Chris Christie.
The Penguin isn't as vile as Chris Christie!
YES, Robin Lord Taylor is definitely the most interesting thing in GOTHAM and it's kind of a shame he's confined to a show with such poor writing. (Incidentally, they shoot GOTHAM at the studio where I'm working and I've seen some cast milling about. They've got talented folks on it, it's just sooo ill-conceived.)
The actors I'm OK with. The writing was just SO dreadful. For example, the Waynes made it clear to Alfred before their deaths that Bruce could never go to therapy? Um... right.
Baby!Bruce in therapy could be a spin-off. On cable.
I would watch BabyBruce in therapy! It'd have to be a bad therapist to drive him to become a Batman, though.
